MEKS- should zoos exist in 21 century???
The idea of whether animals should exist in the 21st century is still in dispute. Some people argue that zoos should exist in the 21st century, while others contend that they should be closed. In this essay, I would put forward reasons for those who agree that zoos should exist in the 21st century and then provide my reasons against them.
It has been argued that zoos are decent place for animals to live because they prevent animals from being hunted by other wild animals. Furthermore, zoos also provide the possibility for people to deepen their knowledge about animal science. The reason for this is that zoos house many different species which can be used by scientists and researchers to conduct research. As a consequence, they can acquire new knowledge about animals and their behaviour.
Opponents of zoos argue that zoos are the best place to cause extinction. This is because living in unnatural habitats makes animals stressed and of course, can cause death. Indeed, animals are forced to adapt to new situations in zoos, and, in fact, many animals fail to adapt and die. In addition, zoos provide the opportunity for people to learn how to exploit and kill animals. The reason for this is that in order to conduct research, animals have to be slaughtered so as to take some of animal’s body parts which are required in research such as kidneys, livers and the like. As a consequence, people may come to think that this is acceptable while in fact it is cruel .
Overall, after looking at reasons above it is my contention that zoos should be closed in the 21st century because the existence of zoos brings detrimental effects to both human and animal life.
